Getting interviews
Applied to hundreds of jobs and still not getting interviews? Here is what is going wrong
Short answer: If hundreds of applications bring no interviews, the problem is usually not the number of applications: your resume looks like everyone else's, your claims aren't backed by proof, and you are applying where a cold application has little chance. Apply to fewer roles with more proof, get referrals or introductions, and find out honestly where you stand; the Satlights Job Readiness Assessment does that in 30 minutes and introduces you to employers if you clear the bar.
Why applications go unanswered
- Everyone looks the same. AI-written resumes and mass-apply tools mean recruiters see thousands of near-identical profiles for each opening.
- Inflated claims backfire. Keyword-stuffed resumes may pass a filter, but experienced reviewers spot claims that don't add up and skip them.
- No proof of work. "Built a scalable microservice" means little without a link, a number or a clear description of your part.
- The wrong roles. Applying to everything, including roles that ask for far more experience, lowers the odds of each application.
- Cold applications are a weak channel. Many roles, especially at startups, are filled through referrals and introductions before the posting gets attention.
What to change
- Cut your resume to what you can defend. For every line, be ready to explain how it works and why you built it that way. Remove anything you cannot.
- Show proof. Link to code, a live project or a write-up, and describe your own part, not the team's.
- Apply narrower, better. Pick roles that match your level and write a two-line note on why you fit that one.
- Use introductions. A warm introduction from someone the employer trusts beats dozens of cold applications.
- Get an outside read. You cannot see your own blind spots; someone who interviews candidates for a living can.
Skip the pile: get assessed, then get introduced
Satlights turns the cold application into an introduction. You take one 30-minute Job Readiness Assessment with a person. Everyone gets a written report of what to fix. About 5% of candidates clear the bar, and we introduce them directly to relevant employers. Of candidates who reached our Medium Risk band, 92% got an interview.
